Black Panther, which is based on a comic book, has become a cultural phenomenon with its Afro-futuristic imagery and celebration of black dignity and sophistication. The story of T’Challa, who after the death of his father prepares to be crowned the new king of Wakanda, has been hailed as an optimistic narrative of African power. Black actors are presented as self-confident protagonists, an exception in Hollywood, leading viewers to rethink their own assumptions about Africa, the civil rights struggle and decolonisation as a wider phenomenon. What would have happened if Africa had not been colonised? What role does the civil rights struggle play in present day U.S. society and how has it reverberated internationally? What is the role of violence in the overthrow of racial oppression?
To give students and prospective students the opportunity to see this movie and discuss this movie the decolonisation group is organising a free film viewing with a Q&A at Movie Theatre ‘t Hoogt.
